Today is Valentine’s Day, so I thought it appropriate to share a little about me and my Valentine! It is fun to think back over our story and remember all the details.
How and when did you first meet?
I met Justin my senior year of high school—1999—when I came to Wichita to visit my brother in college. He and my brother were good friends. He was working at the Martin House, a residential boys home ran by Youth Horizons at the time (YH is where Justin is now Executive Director of Residential Housing…that’s a whole other blog post!)
Was it love at first sight?
Nope, haha! I was his friend’s little sister, who was still in high school, and he was twenty-four. Plus, I was only visiting and had a long-time boyfriend back home.
When did you start dating?
After I moved to Wichita we started dating the fall of 2001. We attended the same church and hung out in the same crowd. He was also my brother’s roommate.
Where was your first date?
We went to Barnes and Noble, because I had a chemistry test the next day and I had to study!
How long did it take to get serious?
Two weeks after we started dating. We were walking and I told him my story of my life before I knew Jesus, and he held my hand for the first time and offered me so much grace. We both knew in that moment that we were with “the one” but did not say it then.
Who said I love you first?
How long had you been dating when you got engaged? Married?
Dated six months (early November to May). Engaged three months (Married August 10, 2002)
Where was your first kiss?
On Friend’s University campus where I lived in the dorms at the time. He parked his truck and played music that we danced to in the parking lot.
How many years have you been together?
Married for 18 years. Together 19 years.
What do you remember most from your wedding day?
It was so much FUN! Food and dancing, and friends, then driving to KC that same night to the airport and getting no sleep because we couldn’t find the hotel and we had to be at the airport at 4:00am.
Did you go to the same school?
Not high school, but we both went to small town schools. We both attended Wichita State, but not at the same time.
Where is the furthest you two have traveled together?
We led a youth mission trip to Antigua together. Justin has traveled the world and I’m a bit jealous, lol.
How many kids do you have?
Three. Two girls and one boy.
What is one of the most memorable or significant times of your marriage?
When I was pregnant with our second baby, Justin was deployed to Iraq for 5 months and I was teaching biology full time. We actually weren’t doing super great in our marriage at the time, but God used the time apart to really grow our hearts toward each other. We look back at his deployment as a significant turning point in our marriage. Then, our daughter was born two days after he got back! We named her Rylie, which means valiant (having sufficient courage), after the verse we memorized together during the deployment…
Philippians 1:20, “I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.”
